Pyramidal boxwoods are indeed a great choice for adding structure to a garden. I've used them in my own space, and they create a nice, formal touch. Maintaining their shape is all about regular care:
Pruning: I usually trim mine in late spring or early summer. It's essential to keep their shape but avoid heavy pruning in fall to protect any new growth from frost damage.
Watering: They thrive in well-draining soil that's consistently moist. I've found that a layer of mulch helps maintain moisture levels and also protects the roots in colder months.
Winter Care: In my experience, using burlap or windbreaks can protect them from winter burn in colder climates. It's important to shield them from harsh winds.
Location and Soil: They're pretty adaptable but prefer soil that's neutral to slightly acidic. Locating them in partial to full sun has worked well for me.
Keep an eye out for Boxwood Blight, a disease that can impact them. I try to ensure there's good air circulation around them to help prevent it.
How do you plan to incorporate them into your garden layout? I'd be interested in hearing any design ideas you have!
