I just came across some prairie smoke seeds and I’m super excited about trying them out in my garden! Has anyone here worked with them before? I’d love to know what germination methods you used and any special care tips you might have, like soil mix or moisture levels. I read that they might need a period of cold stratification—has anyone had success with that?

I’m planning to simulate their native prairie environment as best I can, but any details on the best time to sow them or how to protect those tiny seedlings would be awesome. Let’s chat about our experiences with these unique plants!

I’ve had positive results with a brief cold stratification treatment—about three weeks in the fridge on a well-draining seed mix—followed by sowing in early spring. Protecting the fragile seedlings with a light cloche until they establish can be immensely helpful in temperate climates, especially if you’re simulating a prairie habitat.
