What are the optimal soil compositions and microclimate conditions for maximizing both the bloom quality and disease resistance of Narcissus cultivars? Great points above! I’ll just add that recent studies back up the value of slightly alkaline soils-pH 6.5-7 seems to help, especially with basal rot resistance. Consistent soil moisture (not soggy!) also reduces stress and disease risk. For pest management, rotating plant locations yearly and removing old foliage quickly cut down on narcissus fly and fungal problems in my beds. Has anyone tried introducing nematodes for bulb fly control? Curious to hear if that’s working for others!

One thing I’ve found helpful is mulching with coarse sand or fine gravel around the base-really keeps moisture balanced and discourages fungal splash-up. Also, if you’re into companion planting, interplanting with alliums seems to deter some pests naturally (plus, who doesn’t love more bulbs?). Anyone had luck using biofungicides or is it just another thing my local garden center is trying to sell me?
